So in the Hitched article "32 questions to ask your wedding photographer" they state (paraphrased) that experience is crucial as weddings are unique events, and if you get someone new to it then you'd get what you pay for. Which is partially true...we all have to start somewhere of course, however being a good photographer comes from having a good eye for it, not just a good camera.
I shot my first wedding about 16 years ago, and then part time until I went full time in February 2020 (yes I know! What a time to go into wedding photography full time lol). So you could say 16 years or 2 years, however, I started with great images and I've only got better at it. Experience is only a small part of being a good wedding photographer. After your first wedding you know the structure as most weddings follow a similar path, and you know whether or not it's for you, beyond that it's about the moments and the emotional connection you have to the day.
I love what I do and can't imagine doing anything else. It took almost 40 years for me to go full time, but it's what I was meant to do!
